Standby power refers to the electric power that is consumed' by
electronic appliances and devices whilst they are switched off or sit in
standby mode'. Many electronic devices draw standby power 24 hours per
day, 7 days a week, every month of the year, in order to respond more
quickly when the user turns an appliance on'.Given this, most
standby power that is consumed is considered wasted power as it is not
being used to power' any activity. In fact, measurements in many
countries around the world have estimated that standby power may be as
high as 12% of residential electricity consumption. In the United States,
it has been estimated that standby power, costs consumers more than US$3
billion per year.Most PC and TV accessory devices consume power in
standby mode. This includes devices such as monitors, speakers, modems,
scanners, printers, DVD players, amplifiers, satellite decoders, gaming
consoles etc. With so many of these products in our homes and offices
often in standby mode, it's easy to see how standby power is a constant
